Task 9 (Research tasks)

 Task 9: Cultural policy

What is the DCMS and what do they do?

The DCMS (Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport) “helps to drive growth, enrich lives and promote Britain abroad.” [1]. The DCMS helps to protect the artistic and cultural heritage of the UK as well as aiding businesses and communities in their development by promoting the UK as an ideal place for tourism.

The DCMS gives a list of their priorities. Here they are;

  • Growing the economy

  • Connecting the UK

  • Encouraging participation

  • Sustaining excellence

  • Promoting Britain

  • Supporting British media

  • Ensuring social responsibility

DCMS would be able to support me and my business - through them, I would be able to apply for copyrights on all the designs that I produce. I would want to copyright my designs specifically rather than the physical works themselves so as to not deter clients from posting images of pieces that I have made that they chose to alter in some form. Copyright would protect my intellectual property. 'Design right' would automatically protect my designs for 15 years after it was created rather than the 10 years after it would have first been sold as I wouldn't be selling my designs.

Something that I would need to take into consideration about my business is the way that Covid-19 and Brexit have affected both the world of work, the economy, and business handlings for many people.

For the safety of my customers due to Covid-19, I would wear gloves throughout the whole creation process and a mask when working in close contact with the product. Due to the nature of my business, I don't need to worry about unexpected closures since I won't be renting a studio or office in which I would be within close contact of people who aren't in my household within possibly the first few years of my company after which at that point the Covid-19 pandemic will have been subdued by vaccines. Once I have finished the customer's order and it is ready to be delivered, I will make sure to fully and safely sanitise the order before sending it to the customer.

If I am afflicted with Covid-19 at any point while working, if I have a project that is ongoing I will discuss with the customer if they are okay with waiting while I self isolate as I won't be working on any orders so as to reduce infectivity. If the customer isn't happy with waiting for my isolation period to be over which would be an indeterminate amount of time, I would be happy and feel obligated to refund their deposit as the reason as to why they won't receive their order won't be any fault of their own.

The way that Brexit is affecting businesses, and will affect my own is that EU funding will no longer be available to any businesses within the creative sectors in the UK. In August 2016, the British government declared that it would support some projects that were funded by the EU. With the loss of funding from the EU, I will have a significantly lower chance of receiving government funding for my business. The EU's Horizon 2020 programme awarded funding for innovation to businesses while the UK remained within the EU, which is now lost after the departure of the UK from the EU on the 31st of January, 2020.
